Thai the language of Thailand, sometimes classified as belonging to the Sino-Tibetan family Thai a group of peoples speaking Thai languages. They live in south China, Indochina, and northeast India. Their total number is about 50 million (figures here and below are 1973 estimates). The Thai group includes the Central Thai, or Siamese (19 million), the Lao (11 million), the Chuang (10 million), the Shan (2 million), the Bui (1.8 million), the Tung (1 million), the Thai (700,000), and the Li (550,000). Several minor peoples, such as the Nea Thai, Black Thai, White Thai, Phuthai, Yuan, Tho, Ka-long, Nung, and Nhang, who live in the northern part of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and in Thailand, Burma, and Laos, are collectively called the Hill Thai; their total number is 2 million.
