Talara is a port on the Pacific Ocean; the freight turnover was 2.9 million tons in 1970. The center of a petroleum-extraction region, it is the site of Peru’s largest refinery. The city also has enterprises of the food industry. A petrochemical plant for the production of ammonia and urea was built in 1975, and a carbon-black plant was under construction in 1976. Petroleum is imported, and petroleum products are exported.
