a group of Indonesian islands in the western Pacific Ocean, located between the Moluccas and Mindanao Island. The area of the islands is 1,281 sq km and the highest elevation is 680 m, on the island of Karakelong. The Talaud Islands are composed of gabbros, basalts, sandstones, and, in the coastal areas, coral limestones. They are covered with tropical rain forests. Fishing is a primary industry, and copra and wood products are the major exports. The chief port is Beo.
