a city (since 1959) under oblast jurisdiction and administrative center of Talgar Raion, Alma-Ata Oblast, Kazakh SSR. Situated on the northern slopes of the Zailiiskii Alatau, on a highway, 25 km east of Alma-Ata. Population, 40,000 (1974). Enterprises include clothing and felt factories, a distillery, a wine-making plant, and a butter factory. Construction materials are also produced. Talgar has an agricultural technicum, an agricultural engineering technicum, and a medical school. The Institute of Lithosphere Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR has a permanent seismological crew in Talgar.
