释义 | Sulu SeaSu·lu SeaS0878900 (so͞o′lo͞o)Sulu SeaSu′lu Sea′n. Sulu SeaSulu SeaSulu Seaa sea in the Pacific Ocean, between the Philippine Islands, Palawan Island, Borneo, and the Sulu Archipelago. The Sulu Sea has an area of 335,000 sq km and depths to 5,576 m. Coral reefs are found along the southern shores. The temperature of the surface waters is about 25.5°C in winter and about 29°C in summer. The temperature of the deeper waters (from 500 m to the sea floor) is above 10°C; this is explained by the fact that the depth of the deepest strait between the Sulu Sea and the South China Sea—Mindoro Strait—is only 450 m. The salinity varies between 33 and 34.5 parts per thousand. The sea floor is composed of globigerina ooze with admixtures of volcanic and terrigenous materials. The tides are irregular and semidiurnal and measure 2 to 3 m. The main occupation of the island inhabitants is fishing for reef fish and tuna. The chief ports are Iloilo on Panay Island, Zamboanga on Mindanao, Sandakan on Borneo, and Puerto Princesa on Palawan Island. |
