rebirthing therapy

rebirthing therapy

Fringe medicine
An unconventional form of bodywork and mind/body psychotherapy, developed in the 1970s by Leonard Orr, based on the belief that the trauma of birth has lifelong consequences on a person’s psyche, as the infant passes from the warm safety of the womb to the cold, vast world. In RT, the client is guided through a reenactment of birth with hyperventilation (termed conscious-connected breathing, or vivation), which releases tension said to have begun at birth; an individual’s expression of this repressed trauma is said to facilitate healing of physical, mental and emotional disorders.
Adverse effects
Hyperventilation induces blackouts, which may have serious long-term consequences, and is often accompanied by a severe headache.
