Snezhnevskii, Andrei Vladimirovich

 

Born May 7 (20), 1904, in Kostroma. Soviet psychiatrist. Academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1962). Hero of Socialist Labor (1974). Member of the CPSU since 1945.

Snezhnevskii graduated from the medical department of the University of Kazan in 1925. In 1950 and 1951 he was director of the V. P. Serbskii Institute of Forensic Psychiatry, and from 1951 to 1964 he was head of the subdepartment of psychiatry at the Central Institute for the Advanced Training of Physicians. Beginnning in 1962, Snezhnevskii was also director of the Institute of Psychiatry of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR.

Snezhnevskii’s major works deal with the comprehensive study of the nature and characteristics of schizophrenia, with lingering somatogenic psychoses, and with senility. In 1952, Snezhnevskii became editor of the Zhurnal nevropatologii i psi-khiatrii int. S. S. Korsakova (S. S. Korsakov Journal of Neuropathology and Psychiatry).

Snezhnevskii is an honorary member of the World Psychiatric Association (1972) and a foreign member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in Great Britain, the American associations of psychiatrists and biological research in psychiatry, and societies of psychiatrists in the People’s Republic of Bulgaria, the German Democratic Republic, and the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic. Snezhnevskii has been awarded the Order of Lenin, four other orders, and various medals.
