Serra do Navio

 

the site of the largest deposit of manganese ores in northern Brazil; located in Amapá Territory. The deposit was discovered in 1941; since 1956 mining work has been conducted by a company with the collaboration (49 percent of the stock) of the Bethlehem Steel Corporation of the USA. The manganese content of the ore ranges from 46 percent upward. The total reserves are 120 million tons; 1.5 million tons were mined in 1970. Most of the exported ore is shipped to the USA via the port of Macapá, with which Serra do Navio is linked by rail.
