Rumiantsev Census
Rumiantsev Census
the census carried out in parts of the Left-bank Ukraine in the years 1765–69 by P. A. Rumiantsev at the behest of Catherine II. The census, which was intended to increase treasury revenues, put an end to the mobility of free peasants. It also confirmed the cossack elders in their landholdings and allowed the elders to gain greater control over the peasants, who were kept in a position of feudal dependence.
