Rumiantsev, Valentin Vitalevich

Born July 19, 1921, in the village of Novaia Skatovka, Saratov Oblast. Soviet scientist in mechanics. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1970). Member of the CPSU since 1948.

Rumiantsev graduated from the University of Saratov in 1945. From 1945 to 1965 he worked at the Institute of Mechanics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, and since 1965 he has worked at the Computer Center of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. He has taught concurrently at Moscow State University since 1953 (he became a professor in 1956).

Rumiantsev’s main work has dealt with the stability, control, and stabilization of the motion of mechanical systems and with analytical mechanics. He proposed a method for solving the problem of stability of motion of solid and elastic bodies filled with liquid. He worked on aspects of the theory of stability and optimum stabilization of the motion of systems with respect to part of the variables. He established analogues of the principle of least constraint for systems with nonideal constraints and for continuous media.

Rumiantsev has been awarded two Orders of the Red Banner of Labor, as well as medals.
