Prince Harald Coast
Prince Harald Coast
part of the coast of Queen Maud Land in Eastern Antarctica between 34° and 40° E long. The Prince Harald Coast is washed by the waters of Lützow-Holm Bay of the Sea of Cosmonauts. The edge of the continental glacial shield in this region ends at the sea in steep icy precipices. There are infrequent outcrops of primary rocks in the form of nunataks. The surface of the glacial shield rises steeply inland and in 50–60 km reaches an elevation of 1,000 m.
The Prince Harald Coast was discovered in February 1937 by the Norwegian expedition of Lars Christensen and was named in honor of the Norwegian prince. The region has been explored mainly by a Japanese expedition. (The Showa scientific station has been in operation since 1957.)
