Princess Elizabeth Land

Princess Elizabeth Land

part of Eastern Antarctica between 73° and 88° E long. Princess Elizabeth Land is washed from the north by the Sea of Cooperation and the Davis Sea. Elevation of the surface of the glacial cover in the central section is 2,000–2,500 m above sea level. On the coast there are some ice-free sections, including the Vestfold Oasis. An Australian antarctic expedition operates in the area, which also has been extensively explored by a Soviet expedition. It was discovered by D. Mawson’s British, Australian, and New Zealand expedition in February 1931 and was named in honor of Princess Elizabeth, who is now Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain.
