Peive, Aleksandr Vol’demarovich

Born Jan. 27 (Feb. 9), 1909, in the village of Sementsevo, in what is now Toropets Raion, Kalinin Oblast. Soviet geologist. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1964). Member of the CPSU since 1953.

Peive graduated from the Moscow Geological Prospecting Institute in 1930 and taught there from 1932 to 1935. From 1929 to 1935 he worked at the Scientific Institute for Fertilizers. He began working at the Geological Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in 1935, becoming the institute’s director in 1960.

Peive’s principal works are devoted to development of the theory of geosynclines, clarification of the role of horizontal tectonic movements, and study of the oceanic crust of the geological past and the natural laws of formation of various minerals. He founded the doctrine of abyssal fractures (or lineaments) and their relation to magmatism and metallogeny. Peive also discovered several deposits of bauxites (State Prize of the USSR, 1946), phosphorites, and potassium salts. He received the State Prize of the USSR in 1969 for his work in compiling a tectonic map of Eurasia on a scale of 1:5,000,000.

In 1972, Peive became president of the International Subcommission on the Tectonic Map of the World. He has been awarded the Order of Lenin, three other orders, and various medals.
