the largest higher educational institution in Scotland. The university was founded in 1583. In 1976 it had faculties of divinity, law, arts, social sciences, science, medicine, veterinary medicine, and music. Attached institutions include the New College (founded 1846), an institute of humanities, and a center of rural economy. The university has more than 11,000 students, and the teaching staff numbers 1,370. The university library, founded in 1580, has more than 1 million volumes.

Grantedits Royal Charter in 1582 by James VI, the son of Mary Queenof Scots, the University was founded the following year by theTown Council of Edinburgh, making it the firstpost-Reformation university in Scotland, and the first civicuniversity to be established in the British Isles.

Known in its early years as King James College, or the Tounis(Town's) College, the University soon established itselfinternationally, and by the 18th century Edinburgh was aleading centre of the European Enlightenment and one of thecontinent's principal universities. The University's closerelationship with the city in which it is based, coupled witha forward-looking, international perspective, has keptEdinburgh at the forefront of new research and teachingdevelopments whilst enabling it to retain a uniquely Scottishcharacter.

Edinburgh's academics are at the forefront of developments inthe study and application of languages, medicine,micro-electronics, biotechnology, computer-based disciplinesand many other subjects. Edinburgh's standing as a worldcentre for research is further enhanced by the presence on andaround University precincts of many independently-funded, butclosely linked, national research institutes
