Voropaev, Grigorii Vasil’evich

 

Born Feb. 12, 1932, in Leninsk, Kemerovo Oblast. Soviet hydrologist and specialist in land reclamation. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1976). Member of the CPSU since 1955.

Voropaev graduated from the Moscow Institute of Water Management Engineers in 1955 (now the Moscow Irrigation and Drainage Institute). From 1955 to 1959 he took part in the Tadzhik expedition of the Moscow Irrigation and Drainage Institute and from 1959 to 1971 he conducted studies at the Kazakh Scientific Research Institute of Water Management in Dzhambul. Since 1971 he has been on the staff of the Institute of Water-related Problems of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in Moscow, where he was appointed director in 1976.

Voropaev’s main works are devoted to the hydrology of irrigated land and the utilization and control of water. He developed a series of measures for the improvement of irrigation systems and the increased efficiency of water and land resources. He also set forth the principles for the establishment of a single system of water management in the USSR, as well as methods for studying its development and its effect on the environment.

Voropaev has been awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor and several medals.
