Tigany Burial Ground
Tigany Burial Ground
the oldest authentic necropolis of the early Hungarians in Eastern Europe, dating from the late eighth and early ninth centuries A.D. The Tigany burial ground was discovered in 1974 near the village of Tigany Bol’shie, Alek-seevskoe Raion, Tatar ASSR. In addition to human remains, the graves contained weapons, ornaments, harnesses, horse bones, and silver burial masks. Similar Hungarian burials along the Danube River dating from the ninth and tenth centuries suggest that the Hungarians migrated westward from the Volga and Ural regions in the ninth century.
