Penaty

the estate and museum of the artist I. E. Repin in the village of Repino (formerly Kuokkala), near Leningrad; a branch of the Leningrad Scientific Research Museum of the Academy of Arts of the USSR.

Repin lived at Penaty from 1899 to 1930; visitors to the estate included M. Gorky, V. G. Korolenko, A. I. Kuprin, V. V. Mayakovsky, V. V. Stasov, and K. I. Chukovskii. The Penaty museum, opened in 1940, burned down in 1944. It was restored after the Great Patriotic War (1941–45) and reopened in 1962. Penaty comprises Repin’s house, the estate buildings constructed after 1900, and a park where the artist’s grave is located. On display at Penaty are materials on Repin’s life and work and more than 100 of his works, as well as works by such artists as B. M. Kustodiev and F. A. Maliavin.
