Prithwiraj III
(also Prithviraja or Prithvi Raja). Ruler of the Rajput state of the Chahamanas in North India from 1177 to 1192.
In 1191, Prithwiraj inflicted a defeat upon the conqueror Muhammad of Ghor in a battle at Tarain, a region north of Delhi. However, in a second battle at Tarain, in 1192, he was defeated by Muhammad, taken prisoner, and killed soon after. Prithwiraj is an Indian hero, glorified in the narrative poems Prithiraj Raso by Chand Bardai and Prithirajavijaya, as well as in legends.
