measures taken to protect railroad lines and highways from snowdrifts. The means used include shelterbelt strips of trees or bushes, permanent snow fences, and panels. In the USSR, 70 percent of the railroad tracks subject to drifting snow is protected by natural forests, forest shelterbelts with heights of 15–65 m, brush shelter-belts, and fences 4–7 m high or 2-m square panels arranged in several rows. Forest shelterbelts are positioned 20-30 m from railbeds, and panels are positioned at distances of 30 m or more. The distance from railbeds to fences is 12 times the height of the fence or more.
