Sune Bergström

Bergström, Sune

Born Jan. 10, 1916, in Stockholm. Swedish biochemist. Member of the Swedish Academy of Sciences.

Bergström was on the staff of the Nobel Institute of Medicine in Stockholm from 1942 to 1946 and of the University of Basel in 1946 and 1947. From 1947 to 1958 he was a professor of biochemistry at the University of Lund in Sweden, and in 1958 he became a professor at the Karolinska Institutet; from 1963 to 1966 he served as the dean of the institute’s faculty of medicine.

Bergström’s principal works deal with the chemistry and biochemistry of prostaglandins. Under his direction, the structures of the most important types of prostaglandins were discovered; he also established the mechanism for the biosynthesis and metabolism of prostaglandins in mammals.

Bergström was appointed chairman of the Nobel Foundation in 1975. Bergström is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a foreign member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1976).
