Vasilev, Petr Vasilevich

Born Aug. 13 (25), 1899, in the village of Staiki, in present-day Kaluga Oblast. Soviet graphic artist and painter. Honored Art Worker of the RSFSR (1946).

Vasil’ev studied in Odessa in the Fine Arts School (1914-19) and the Art Institute (1921-26) with K. K. Kostandi and P. G. Volokidin. He created a series of graphic works devoted to the life and work of V. I. Lenin (Lenin [1937, 1938, 1944, 1945, 1949] and Vladimir Il’ich Lenin [I960, 1962, 1967], published in albums, and an easel series entitled Vladimir Il’ich Lenin [1943—45], Tret’iakov Gallery). He painted the pictures Chapayev (1934, Central Armed Forces Museum, Moscow) and Speech ofV. I. Lenin in RedSquare in 1919 (1949, Yaroslavl-Rostov Museum-Reserve). He was awarded the State Prize of the USSR in 1947.
