Penev, Boian Nikolov

 

Born Apr. 27, 1882, in Shumen; died June 25, 1927, in Sofia. Bulgarian literary scholar and critic. Corresponding member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (1918).

Penev graduated from the University of Sofia in 1907, becoming a docent there in 1909 and a professor in 1925. A literary scholar of the school of cultural history, Penev is the author of such works as A History of Modern Bulgarian Literature (vols. 1–4, 1930–36) and Western European Romanticism and Its Reflection in Slavic Literatures (1938). His works on Bulgarian literature are primarily devoted to the formation and development of literary genres during the national revival.
