Bernardskii, Evstafii Efimovich

 

Born 1819; died 1889. Russian engraver.

Bernardskii studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1838–43). In his wood engravings based on the drawings of A. A. Agin (illustrations done in 1846–47 for N. V. Gogol’s Dead Souls, and in 1846 for I. S. Turgenev’s poem The Landlord), G. G. Gagarin (illustrations done in 1845 for V. A. Sollogub’s story Tarantass), and others, he gave a creative interpretation of the original, enhancing its satirical meaning. From 1845 to 1849 he was a member of the Petrashevskii Circle.
