urethra (yo͝orē`thrə), canal in most mammals that carries urine from the bladderbladder, urinary, muscular sac located in the pelvis that stores urine and contracts to expel it from the body. Urine enters the bladder from the kidneys through the ureters and is discharged from the body via the urethra. The bladder of the adult human can hold over a pint (0. ..... The urethra is about 1 1-2 in. long (3.8 cm) in women, terminating above the vaginal opening. In men the urethra is about 8 in. (20 cm) long and terminates in an opening at the end of the penis. In the male the urethra is connected to the prostate glandprostate gland, gland that is part of the male reproductive system. The urethra is a tube whose wall consists of an internal mucous membrane, a muscular membrane, and a connective tissue membrane. In males the urethra emerges from the urinary bladder, descends through the prostate gland, passes between the two layers of the urogenital diaphragm under the pubic arch, enters the corpus spongiosum of the penis, and opens to the exterior of the body at the tip of the penis. The male urethra is about 20 cm long and about 7 mm in diameter. In females the urethra is much shorter—about 5 cm—and follows an almost straight path that ends in an external opening in the vestibule of the vagina. The section of the urethra that emerges from the urinary bladder is surrounded by a sphincter—a ring-shaped constrictor muscle. The walls of the empty urethra are normally touching, becoming distended only during urination. In males the orifices of the deferent ducts and of the prostate gland open into the urethra at the point where the urethra passes through the prostate; thus, both urine and semen are expelled through the male urethra. The mucous membrane of the urethra contains glands. Inflammatory processes in the urethra can result in constriction caused by scarring, a condition that requires surgical treatment. urethra[yə′rē·thrə] (anatomy) The canal in most mammals through which urine is discharged from the urinary bladder to the outside. urethra the canal that in most mammals conveys urine from the bladder out of the body. urethra [u-re´thrah] the tubular passage through which urine is discharged from the bladder to the exterior of the body. adj., adj ure´thral. The external urinary opening is called the urinary meatus. In men the urethra conveys both urine and the secretions of the reproductive organs. In women its sole function is urination. The female urethra is about 4 cm long; its opening is situated between the clitoris and the opening of the vagina. The male urethra is about 20 cm long and is narrower than that of the female. It has three sections: prostatic, membranous, and penile. It extends downward from the bladder through the prostate, which secretes into it a thin fluid. The membranous portion of the urethra receives the secretion of the bulbourethral glands. The urethra then extends down through the main body of the penis to the opening, or meatus, at the tip. Along the entire length of the passage are mucous glands.Using a swab to obtain a urethral specimen from a male and a female client. In females, its orifice lies in the vestibule between the vagina and clitoris; in males, the urethra passes through the prostate gland and the penis, opening at the tip of the glans penis. In males, it serves as the passage for semen as well as urine. Its lining, the mucosa, is thrown into folds and contains the openings of the urethral glands. Surrounding the mucosa is a lamina propria containing many elastic fibers and blood vessels, outside of which is an indefinite muscular layer. In the male, the urethra runs along the penis and opens at the tip. In addition to urine it carries seminal fluid during ejaculation. In the female, the urethra is shorter and runs directly downwards from the bladder in front of the VAGINA, opening between the vaginal orifice and the CLITORIS.urethra the duct by means of which URINE is discharged from the BLADDER in mammals. In males the distal part of the duct also has a reproductive function, carrying semen from the VAS DEFERENS and voiding to the exterior via the penis.UrethraA passageway from the bladder to the outside for the discharge of urine. In the female this canal lies between the vagina and clitoris; in the male the urethra travels through the penis, opening at the tip.Mentioned in: Cystometry, Cystoscopy, Enlarged Prostate, Gonorrhea, Hypospadias and Epispadias, Impotence, Lithotripsy, Marshall-Marchetti-Krantz Procedure, Neurogenic Bladder, Nongonococcal Urethritis, Paruresis, Prostate Biopsy, Prostate Ultrasound, Prostatectomy, Retrograde Cystography, Retrograde Urethrography, Saw Palmetto, Urinalysis, Urine Flow Testurethra Related to urethra: Membranous urethra, Male urethraWords related to urethranoun duct through which urine is discharged in most mammals and which serves as the male genital ductRelated Words- duct
