[′pen·iŋ ‚trap] (engineering) A device for trapping electrons and isolating single electrons, consisting of a large, homogeneous magnetic field plus a superimposed weak parabolic electric potential created by a positive charge + Q on a ring electrode and two negative charges -Q /2 each on two cap electrodes.
