snubber

[′snəb·ər] (mechanical engineering) A mechanical device consisting essentially of a drum, spring, and friction band, connected between axle and frame, in order to slow the recoil of the spring and reduce jolting.

snubber, 1 1. A component of a vibration isolator that limits the displacement of the isolator in either the vertical or horizontal direction. 2. On a very large expulsion-type fuse, a silencer that reduces the loud noise produced in clearing heavy electrical faults.

i. A component in a hydraulic or pneumatic actuator that slows down the motion of the piston toward the end of its travel and thus cushions the stopping action of the piston.
ii. A restrictor fitting installed between an oil pressure gauge and the pressure pump. A snubber prevents the indicator from oscillating.
