Under the charter granted (1670) to the company by Charles II, the region comprised the drainage basin of Hudson Bay. The area embraced what is today the provinces of Ontario and Quebec N of the Laurentians and W of Labrador; all of Manitoba; most of Saskatchewan; the southern half of Alberta; the eastern part of Nunavut Territory; and portions of Minnesota and North Dakota in the United States. In 1870 the Hudson's Bay Company transferred Rupert's Land to Canada for £300,000 but retained certain blocks of land for trading and other purposes. |
