Veterinary Sanitary Plant

an enterprise for rendering harmless and utilizing animal carcasses, by-products of meat-packing plants, and by-products of the tanning-rawhide industry. The principal function of a veterinary sanitary plant is rapid removal of animal carcasses and byproducts to prevent the spread of agents of infectious disease. Its secondary function is the conversion of carcasses and by-products to meat-and-bone meal, the production of industrial fat, and the release of hides, horns, hooves, and hair to light-industry enterprises. The principal equipment of a veterinary sanitary plant consists of destructors (boilers), in which the raw material is rendered harmless at temperatures of 133-143° C and pressures of 0.3-0.4 meganewtons per sq m (3-4 kilograms-force per sq cm). All operations for conversion of raw materials at veterinary sanitary plants are conducted under the control of veterinary personnel. About ten veterinary sanitary plants are in operation (1970) in the USSR. Construction of another 125 plants is planned.
