Talysh Khanate

a Talysh feudal state in Azerbaijan that was established in the mid-18th century on the southwest coast of the Caspian Sea during the collapse of the Nadir Shah regime.

The founder of the ruling dynasty of the Talysh Khanate, Seid Abbas, was a member of the local feudal aristocracy. After his death, the khanate was ruled by his son Gara from 1747 to 1786. The khanate’s economy was based on land cultivation and stock raising; the capital, Lenkoran, became a center of handicrafts and trade. Owing to continuous acts of aggression on the part of Iran, the khanate developed a pro-Russian orientation. In 1795 the Talysh khan, Mir-Mustafa, appealed to Russia for protection. The khanate became a protectorate in 1802, and by the Treaty of Turkmanchai (1828) it was finally annexed to Russia.
