Tihama

a littoral desert plain in the southwestern part of the Arabian Peninsula. The Tihama extends more than 1,000 km along the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden through Saudi Arabia, the Yemen Arab Republic (YAR), and the People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen (PDRY). Its width varies from a few kilometers to 70–80 km. The sloping surface has occasional outliers of bedrock among loose deposits. Sandy and sandy-pebbly deserts predominate, intersected in places by the channels of wadis. Subterranean water is fairly abundant, and salt marshes are encountered.

The Tihama is one of the hottest and driest deserts on earth, with average temperatures of 24°C in January and 31°C in July and less than 100 mm of annual precipitation. It has sparse vegetation consisting of acacias, tamarisk, and halophytes, as well as occasional oases. The cities of Jidda in Saudi Arabia, Al-Hudaydah and Mocha in the YAR, and Aden in the PDRY are located in the Tihama.
