Tikar


Tikar

 

(self-designation, Langtumu), a people living in Cameroon, along the upper course of the M’Bam River. The population of the Tikar, together with that of the related Nsau (Bansaw), Kom (Bamekom), Nsungli, and other tribes, is approximately 300,000 (1970, estimate). The Tikar language is one of the Eastern Bantoid languages. Most Tikar are Muslims. Their chief occupation is farming, mainly the cultivation of millet, corn, and yams. Many Tikar work on coffee, kola, and tobacco plantations.
