Soaking of a Material

The term “soaking” is applied to the change of the mechanical and physical properties of a material during the initial stages of repeated stresses. Soaking produces increased resistance to both static and fatigue failure. In metals this increased resistance to failure results from the plastic deformation of the more heavily loaded and more ductile components of a nonuniform structure.
