Trombe wall

Trombe wall

Consists of an 8- to 16-inch thick masonry wall on the south side of a house. A single or double layer of glass is mounted about 1 inch or less in front of the wall’s surface. Solar heat is absorbed by the wall’s dark-colored outside surface and stored in the wall’s mass, where it radiates into the living space. Also referred to as a solar wall.

Trombe wall

A passive solar-energy thermal storage device used in houses. Consists of a thermal storage wall, usually of masonry or concrete, 8 to 16 in. (20 to 40 cm) thick, that is coated with a dark heat-absorptive material; and a glass skin, placed in front of the wall that leaves an air space ³/4 in. to 6 in. (2 cm to 15 cm) between the wall and the glass. Solar energy that strikes the glass is absorbed by the wall during the day and released to the house during the evening.
