Penzias, Arno Penzias, Arno (Allan)(1933– ) radio astronomer; born in Munich, Germany. He immigrated to the United States as a boy and became a citizen in 1946. Educated at Columbia University, he joined American Telephone & Telegraph Bell Laboratories in 1961. In 1978 he won the Nobel Prize in physics for his work with colleague Robert Wilson in discovering cosmic microwave background radiation that supports the "big bang" theory. As vice-president of research at Bell Labs, his work focused on revolutionary new communications technology. |
