Tikhov, Gavriil Adrianovich

Born Apr. 19 (May 1), 1875, in Smolevichi, in what is now Minsk Oblast; died Jan. 25, 1960, in Alma-Ata. Soviet astronomer. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1927); academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR (1946).

Tikhov graduated from Moscow University in 1897. Between 1906 and 1941 he was a staff member first at the Pulkovo Observatory and then at the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR. His research was primarily in the fields of astrometry and spectrophotometry. His important comparative study of the spectrophotometric properties of the surface of Mars and terrestrial vegetation laid the foundations for astrobotany. A number of his other works were concerned with aspects of atmospheric optics and aerial photography. He constructed several astronomical instruments. Tikhov was awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and various medals.
