Tikhvin Water System
Tikhvin Water System
one of the waterways connecting the Volga with the Baltic Sea. The Tikhvin Water System begins at the Rybinsk Reservoir, continues along the Chagodoshcha, Goriun, and Sominka rivers, passes through the Tikhvin Connecting Canal, and continues along the Tikhvinka and Sias’ rivers, across Lake Ladoga, and along the Neva. The system was opened to traffic in 1811. Since its facilities have become obsolete, the system is used today only for local navigation. The lower section of this route has been made part of the Volga-Baltic Waterway.
