Sobaek

Sobaek

a mountain range in South Korea; the southwestern branch of the East Korea Mountains. The Sobaek range is approximately 300 km long and reaches a maximum elevation of 1,594 m. It is the main divide in South Korea. From the south, the range adjoins the massive Chii-san, which rises 1,915 m. The Sobaek range is composed chiefly of granites, gneisses, and quartzites and has sharp ridges and steep slopes. There are gold deposits in Kimch’on and molybdenum deposits in Changsu. The slopes are covered with broad-leaved forests of oak and ash and mixed forests of broad-leaved trees and fir and pine. Evergreen forests are found in the southern Sobaek range.
