Sobat

(sō`bät), river, c.200 mi (320 km) long, formed on the Ethiopia–South Sudan border, E Africa, by the confluence of the Baro and Pibor rivers. It flows generally NW through NE South Sudan, past Nasir, to the White Nile just SW of Malakal. It is navigable in the flood season.

Sobat

 

a river in East Africa, mainly in the Sudan, a right tributary of the White Nile. The Sobat is formed by the confluence of the Baro and Pibor rivers. Its length from the sources of the Baro is 730 km; it drains an area of approximately 350,000 sq km.

The Sobat flows through mountainous and hilly regions, mainly through the savanna zone. High water occurs in the summer rainy season, from June to December; the maximum flow occurs in November. The mean annual flow rate at the mouth is 412 cu m per sec. In winter and spring many of the Sobat’s tributaries dry up. The river is navigable during the rainy season as far as the city of Nasir, located 300 km from the mouth.
