People's Representative Bodies

People’s Representative Bodies

in the German Democratic Republic, organs of state power in districts, counties, cities, urban districts, communities, and consolidated communities.

The people’s representative bodies independently decide all questions relating to the particular administrative unit and its citizens; organize the participation of citizens in political, economic, and cultural life; and cooperate with public organizations of the working people. The people’s representative body elects an executive organ—the council—and forms commissions to carry out its functions and implement its decisions.
