Absent Bow Tie Sign

A term referring to the appearance of the meniscus on MRI, in which multiple sagittal T1 weighted images reveal a loss of the normal bow-tie appearance of the meniscus. The 'absent bow tie sign' usually indicates a bucket handle tear of the meniscus, due to the displaced fragment which makes up the 'handle' of the bucket. A definitive statement as to the bow tie’s absence requires at least two adjacent sagittal images lacking a normal meniscal body segment appearance
