Russian Wolfhound(in English also known as borzoi), an ancient breed of hunting dog of the borzoi group. The breed has been known in Europe since 1517 and was developed over many centuries in Russia by crossing ancient Russian borzois (long-headed dogs, skulls of which have been found in ancient Scythian settlements) with Crimean and Caucasian borzois. The Russian wolfhound is the largest of the borzois. The males stand 70–82 cm high at the shoulder, and the females, 65–77 cm. The head and trunk are narrow, and the legs are long and slender. The coat is long and wavy; the coloration is white (sometimes with spots of various colors) or tan or rust-colored with a black cast. The Russian wolfhound is distinguished by good eyesight, swiftness, and a strong instinct for chasing and seizing prey. It is bred in small numbers everywhere. The breed is used in sport hunting; in the USSR it is used to hunt rabbit and fox. Abroad, it is used in races after mechanical rabbits. It is also raised for its attractive appearance.
