Russkoe Bogatstvo

(Russian Riches), a scientific, literary, and political journal published from 1876 to 1918. It was founded in Moscow and transferred to St. Petersburg in the middle of 1876. Until 1879 it was issued three times a month; thereafter it appeared monthly.

The journal’s liberal Narodnik (Populist) orientation was set in 1879, when N. N. Zlatovratskii became the actual editor. After 1892 the journal was headed by N. K. Mikhailovskii and V. G. Korolenko, and its role in literary and public life grew sharply. The journal became the center of legal narodnichestvo. In 1894–95 it carried on a theoretical struggle against the Marxists. Realist writers who contributed to Russkoe bogatstvo included N. G. Garin-Mikhailovskii, D. N. Mamin-Sibiriak, K. M. Staniukovich, I. A. Bunin, L. N. Andreev, M. Gorky, A. I. Kuprin, and V. V. Veresaev.

The journal was subjected to repression in 1906 and again in 1914. From 1914 through March 1917, it was published as Russkie zapiski (Russian Notes). In 1918 it was shut down by the Soviet government for anti-Soviet articles.
