Russo-Austrian Treaty of Alliance of 1781
Russo-Austrian Treaty of Alliance of 1781
an alliance concluded in an exchange of letters between Catherine II and Joseph II. The deterioration of relations with Turkey, as well as proposals by the Austrian emperor Joseph II regarding the conclusion of a mutual assistance agreement, prompted Catherine II’s government to open negotiations with the Viennese court. The treaty guaranteed the territorial inviolability of the possessions of the contracting parties, mutual assistance in the event of war against Turkey or Sweden, and the renunciation of separate negotiations in the event of a joint war.
