RutaRuta(rue), a genus of plants of the family Rutaceae. The plants are perennial herbs and subshrubs. The leaves are mottled with pellucid glandules containing aromatic essential oils. The flowers are four- or five-parted and in dichasial inflorescences. The fruit is a four- or five-locular capsule. There are about 60 species of rue, distributed mainly in the Mediterranean region and in the temperate zone of Asia. The USSR has one species, common rue (R. graveolens), which grows on rocky slopes in the Crimea. It is a poisonous plant. Common rue contains 0.1–0.15 percent essential oils; it also contains the flavonoid rutin and furocoumarins. In some countries rue is cultivated as a spice and medicinal plant. RutaRUTA, civ. law.
