Setter

any one of several breeds of pointing dogs used for hunting birds. Setters have an instinctive set with which they indicate the location of hidden birds and a strongly developed sense of smell. Three setter breeds have been developed: the English Setter, or Laverack Setter (England), the Irish Setter, or Irish Red Setter (Ireland), and the Gordon Setter (Scotland). Setters measure 54–67 cm high at the shoulder. The ears are pendant, and the fur is long, soft, and wavy. The most common setters in the USSR are the English and the Irish breeds, which were first raised in Russia in the second half of the 19th century.
