Tanchon

 

a city in the People’s Democratic Republic of Korea, in Hamgyong-namdo Province. Situated on the Sea of Japan, at the mouth of the Namdae River. Population, about 300,000. Railroad junction.

During the years of the people’s power, Tanchon has become an important industrial center. It has a magnesite plant and enterprises of the machine-building, sawmilling, textile, and food-processing industries. The fishing industry is also important to the city’s economy. The Hochon-gang Hydroelectric power system is located nearby. Magnesite, iron ore, and copper are mined.
