a university in Trondheim, Norway. It was established in 1968 on the basis of the Norwegian Institute of Technology (founded 1900) and the Norwegian College for Teachers (founded 1922).

In 1975 the university had faculties of philology, mathematics and natural sciences, and social sciences and departments of architecture, mining and metallurgy, civil engineering, electrical engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, and general sciences. The Museum of the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters, founded in 1760, is affiliated with the university. The university’s scientific and technical libraries have about 1 million volumes. In the 1974–75 academic year the university had a student body of approximately 7,400 and a teaching staff of about 600 professors and instructors.
