An epidemic infection caused by a highly virulent, antibiotic-resistant strain of group-A streptococcus, which begins as a mild skin infection or “strep throat” and rapidly progresses to high fever, hypotension, focal vasodilatation and soft-tissue cellulitis of an intensity that may require amputation; most cases occur in patients without predisposing factors.
