Baranof Island has mountains with maximum elevations of 1,432 m, covered with coniferous temperate rain forests. There is fishing (Sal-monidae) and timber logging. The largest settlement, port, and fishing center is Sitka (Novo-Arkhangel’sk), with a population of 3,237 (1960). The island was named in honor of A. A. Baranov. |
