Baranovskii, Stepan Ivanovich

 

Born Dec. 23, 1817, in the village of Kapustino, Myshkin District Yaroslavl Province; died 1890. Russian inventor, scholar, and social figure.

Baranovskii’s basic works are dedicated to various branches of mechanics, geometry, geography, statistics, linguistics, history of literature, medicine, and others. He constructed a multistage compressor joined with a receptacle made of tubes, called a blower, which was first mounted on a diesel shunting locomotive of his own construction (1862). He also constructed, together with his son V. S. Baranov-skii, a submarine and other inventions. He was the author of a series of designs for a Middle Asian railroad and was one of the initiators of the construction of the Siberian railroad.
